I know GM Chee and Master Yap Cheng Hai have been known to demonstrate Shen Tar in the past, however I was not aware that it was part of the art itself. I know there is a very deep spiritual aspect to NCK if you seek it, but it requries a lot of training and meditation. Hi Fatman, Could you tell us more about this? When I raised this topic, I wasn’t really referring to “Tan Ki” – you know temple mediums who go into a trance and blah blah blah…….. I am more talking about going into a trance and doing kung Fu. For instance:- • Some styles I know would go into a trance to do “Kwan Doe”. The “spirit” called here is supposedly “Kwan Kong”. • Monkey kung fu with “Ta Sheng” spirit. • Drunken kung fu with “8 Immortals”. • Doing Lohan with “Tat Mor”. Even in Fuzhou Ancestral Crane, there is a “Shen Tar” form that we learn that is only exhibited once a year. As a rule, only during anniversary dinner’s performance and in front of “Bai He Chen Ren” altar. The person chosen to do this form has to stay “clean” for 7 days – no meat diet, no sex and no alcohol. The performance starts with prayers and then offering white wine to the White Crane deity to invite him. So the form is purportedly done by the “spirit” of the White Crane Deity.

Suanna which branch of Ngo Chor Kun are you a Student off? DM Diligentmantis ni hao I am under the lineage of Grandmaster LO BAN TENG. I have been practising the arts since early 70s, as far as I know, Ngo Cho Kun DO NOT have what we know as "Shen Ta" in its curriculum. But some sifu, who has the additional knowledge regarding this, usually add them in the subjects. My own sifu also practising Shen Ta in his bukoan, NOT BECAUSE IT IS PART OF NCK lessons. But because he has the ability to invite spirits and other aspects regarding it. Cheers.

Dear all,
Very interesting running through the ‘mysterious’ layers (and replies) of this thread. I took the opportunity to read again through all the pages. In fact Shen Da Gung seems to be much more practiced that some wanted to see/ hear. For me this is nothing special, but for some of you, it seems?
Still it is good that we are looking deeper then the surface, a good first step, at the end we seems to speak a little bit the same language. It is human to think that we are unique in our skills and knowledge, but at the end we are able to realize that we are just a small piece of a huge puzzle. And not more then that!
Change the world and starts within yourself. Preserve the art was a thread that I start, I hope that this will be done by many in a honest way. Many ancients/ grandmasters spent there whole life in refining skill, and we let it flow away, a shame and (IMHO) disrespectful.
Warm regards,
Evert.

Hi Eric, I personally have not had experience of this, though a good friend of mine has. He told me that once Sifu Yap Cheng Hai did some prayers and used some symbols to call a spirit to teach my friend kung fu. Suddenly he felt his body moving on its own, doing a form he had never learned before. When it was done, Sifu Yap thanked the spirit and everything went back to normal. I have heard several stories like this from students who trained in Kuala Lumpur. I saw enough amazing things while at the headquarters of our school to believe them.

That's pretty much the way it's done within Hak Fu Muhn also. To my knowledge it's always done to learn a form or techniques ,that you've never been taught. My sigung was known for his kung fu ,and as a high level spiritual boxer. It's part of what has kept Black Tiger closed to outsiders. jeff

Howdy folks, So far we’ve been talking about Shen Tar within orthodox established Kung Fu. Please continue to share your Shen Tar. Now, there are dedicated Shen Tar streams out there. Folks who don’t do Kung Fu like us but just Shen Tar. Got some pictures from these schools.

Errrrh this cannot be good. Candles are "hell" food.
So which deity in on the altar?
In some SE Asian temples, they pierce themselves with skewers, knives and other sharp objects.
Bloooooooody.......
Glad I am only doing layman's Kung Fu.
Life is too complicated already.
