Eric, does your system have Sam Jien Kuen? How similar is it to GojuRyu's or UechiRyu's Sanchin Kata? How similar is it to SPM's Sam Bo Jin? What is the breathing like? Is there percentage breathing and packing? Is it hard and tense, or soft ? (That can be broken down two ways-is the body hard and tense or soft, or is the breathing hard and tense or soft?) I am always searching for the quintessential samjien kuen.

I am always searching for the quintessential samjien kuen. I do 2 SanChin sets in my White Crane. The first is Sanjin which is from the Whooping Crane’s line. Essentially much softer than your average SanChin. The name Sanjin (Fuzhou) actually means “3 Advances” as opposed to the normal “3 Battles” found in other CKF and Karate. You can view this form in Russ Smith’s site. SanJin is the seed form of Whooping Crane – the concept of “Swallowing, spitting, sinking and floating” and 5 elements hands are rolled into this one form. The “Whipping” jin that you are hear is also taught in this form. Read my posts in the Fuzhou Crane thread to get more details. Russ’ site:- www.goju-ryu.infoThe other SanChin that I do is “3 Battles” from Fuzhou Ancestral Crane. Comparatively, harder but basically still all about SSSF. The quality that separates this version from others is perhaps the emphasis on “shaking”. This form is entry level form into Ancestral Crane which is characterized by “shaking”. To me Goju’s and even Ueichi’s SanChin look more akin to Fukien Yong Chun White Crane’s San Zhan (Mandarin). Or maybe even to my Tai Chor (Grand Ancestor) San Chiem. You can take a look at Yong Chun White Crane’s version here:- www.fujianbaihe.comThis site belongs to Martin Watts – a good friend with left-over hairdo from the flower power generation. For that he earned this nickname; Hippie Crane. Are you reading this Martin? Crop your hair before your next China’s trip hahaha.
