I hope members of the forum find this an interesting topic for discussion. I am sure there are many teachers and students who have their own methods an ideals on teaching.
I would like to present my generalisation of teaching models for my students to the forum.
I have two generic models.
The first is for those whose goal is to learn the martial aspect of Chinese martial arts—the forms, the concepts and theories, sparring, application, etc. This model is generated for the majority of students who participate in a classroom environment.
Within the generic model, there are specific models. One model for basics—kicks, punches, stances, etc; another model for a particular style or sytem e.g Lau ga Kuen's — empty hand form, application, drills, sparring sets, etc; another model for wing chun, hung ga, moi fa etc.... you get the picture.
The second model is more specific to a person needs or my interpretation to needs of the person to learn Shaolin Gung fu. This may mean that I need to teach a person certain qualities like relaxation or explosiveness that is expressed in a form or style. This model is applied to advanced students or those wishing to learn shaolin gung fu for health whom shy away from a more physical environment. With this model I can go into greater depth about the concepts and theories of Shaolin Gung fu.
regards
NSLK
