Other than an honor to continue my ancestors great heritage, this is my reason:

Because it feels like the natural thing to do. It's fun, it's hard, it feels like something I'm priviliged to do.

Da jia ni men hao The first reason that I trained in martial arts was simple. Because nearly all my best mates trained. One trained in Kao Kun (Monkey Fist), others trained in TKD,Karate, Judo. At that time, it was something "cool" to trained in martial arts. Thanks to Bruce Lee Siau Lung ! Of course the wish to be able to defended myself also part of the reasons. After enggaged in the arts, I trained so hard so I could reach advance level and helped my sifu to teach, to open a bukoan of my own. But up until today, I still can remember clearly when my sifu told me something that affacted and influenced my perspective of the art completely. He told me that THE GOAL OF A MARTIAL ARTIST'S LEARNING WAS NOT FIGHTING. IT IS NEITHER FOR SHOWING OFF NOR PROVING YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DEFEATING OTHER PEOPLE. My sifu said that THE FINAL GOAL OF LEARNING IS TO DISCOVER THE MEANING OF LIFE. Of course I could not accept and understand that concept then. However, now I am much older, I can start to understand what my sifu meant at that time. That's why I am still "learning" the arts. Cheers.

My reason to learn martial art? The reason is very simple, and this is my true reason since I was a child. Neither to fight others or else, my reason is just this.. because I like it. I train for my own pleasure, and enjoying every minute I train. But also have a desire to get deeper into the real essence of the art itself.

My reason of study Wushu is that there is no reason. At first, it feels like a daily chore. If it is not practice, it will be housework or farm work. This was an alternative. I was told that people practice physical activity daily may live longer. I heard the old generals that climb mountain, swim or pratice Tai Ji live to 90 years old. What is Tai Ji? Growing up in '60 in Taiwan, I saw old people practice Wushu in the park every morning. In '70, there were disco, arobics, nay, I practiced my Shaolin Quan. In '80, there were MTV, Mike Jackson, Madonna, blah blah dance moves, nay I practiced my Tai Ji, Ba Gua, and Xing Yi. If not Wushu, what is your physical activity? Why is that there are so many people in the park or stadium of Taiwan Univ every morning in Taipei? What are they doing, yoga, arobic or dance to the music? Nah, I practice Chen Tai Ji Lao Jia Yi Lu, 8 big palm in Ba Gua Zhang, Xing Yi 8 Shi, 12 animals, etc. I would look mighty funny if I were still doing disco or hippop every morning in the park when I am 80 years old.

As a person grown up in the country that "not so friendly" towards hoa kiau, I can "survived" easier with the arts and skills that I learned. Cheers.
