Good day everybody.
Even more confusing, when you visit places like Singapore and Malaysia, the traditional places are called Wu Kuan/ Wushu Kuan. Many old people here refer to Wushu as kung fu and vice versa, although they are not talking about modern Wushu, but traditional kungfu, or Wushu.
Literal definition of kungfu is skill. Rowing a boat requires that kungfu, gardening requires its own specific kungfu as well. However, kungfu has become a generic term to represent martial arts.
Wushu, on the other hand, has a more specific meaning. Wu means battle/war/fight. Shu means skill/art. Therefore, Wushu means the art of fighting. However, the modern day exercise/dance has adopted the generic term Wushu, I feel to cloak its departure from the traditional ways.
Either way, elders will refer to kungfu as Wushu, but don't be mistake it for modern day Wushu.
Warmest regards, Tze Hou
