I started with regular steps.
I then practice Ru Bu (slow steps)
I then practice Tang Nih Bu (muddy walk or walk in the mud).
This is the basic step in Ba Gua.
How do you practice?

In reply to how do you walk: As a Fu style practioner, my step would be described as a sliding step. Some may refer to this as a water step. I refer to the step a snake searching. Logic: There are a whole series of foot attacks at groung level. These attacks are all below the level of the ankle. These are "old hand" concepts, in nature & I have not met hardly any Pa Kua practioners who know these. (I am not refering to Kuo Bu, Bai Bu especially, but these are incorperated for some of the foot positioning) What is your own Pa Kua style ? I have been doing Gung Fu for 40 yrs & Internal arts about 25 of those years. So, I only know a little bit. Thanks for kicking off these dialogs. In Tao, oldragon

Yes. Muddy walk is also a sliding step. I had to practice to walk in a straight line. With the foot barely above the ground, so that there is no up and down of the knee and the whole body while walking. I had to practice a long time. Yes, You are correct. Bai Bu (swing step) and Kou Bu (button step) are introduced afterwards. These two steps are to make turns or to walk in a circle or figure 8. I was told that the Gong Fu of Ba Gua Zhang is in the walk. Yi Zou Wei Yong. (To walk is to make utilization) Yi Zhang Wei Fa. (Use the palm as the method) I had to walk for 25 min sometimes 1h and half. Just walk in circles. I studied Cheng (Zheng) Shi Ba Gua. We use the dragon palm (Long Xing Zhang). The 8 basic palm. The 8 big palms. The 8x8=64 palm methods. The swiming dragon sets. etc.
