Another article from my old website :-
The birthplace of Choy Lee Fut was King Mui, a village in Ngai Sai, in Sun Wui district or county of Kwangtung province. Since the Sung dynasty (960-1280AD), the region about the rugged costal ledges had been a stronghold of stanch revolutionaries against the ruthless and tyrannical rulings of those in power. The penchant to the martial arts has always been an integrated part of life and custom. This was the background to Choy Lee Fut's coming to being.
The founder of Choy Lee Fut, Chan Heung, was from King Mui. Fellow clansman Chan Yuen Wu first taught him for some ten years. Later, Chan Heung was referred to Lee Yau Shan, with whom he spent several years and finally Chan Heung went to Lau Fou Shan (Mt. Lau Fou), where he spent eight years with a monk named Choy Fook. As Chan Heung had absorbed a great deal in Kung Fu, he thought it only right to produce a system of his own, drawing on his long years of learning under his mentors. Being a man of principles, he paid due respects to his teachers by naming his creation Choy Lee Fut, Choy and Lee being the surnames of his two mentors, both taught him genuine Siu Lam Kung Fu and Fut – the fighting art of Buddhist devotees.
Choy Lee Fut kung Fu though has always been openly taught. The passage of time, well over a century, has resulted in many new techniques being added onto the original by practitioners throughout the long span of time.
It is now hard to separate the technique, which were formulated by Chan Heung, and those that are the conception of practitioners of the later eras.
The three major streams of the system practiced today are: -
• Hung Sing
• Huang Sing – also pronounced as Hung Sing
• Buc Sing
Choy Lee Fut is now taught all over the world.
