When I was taught samjien/sanchin-I was taught to use reverse breathing-withdrawing tensing the tan-tein, while packing the breath. Basically, the breath was held down, and each inhalation was "pushed" down on top of it, exhaling only a portion, while still maintaining reserve. This sort of 'pressurized' the body and the organs, much like a pneumatic tire pushes out equally in all directions. Each inhalation and exhalation was described as "breathing off the top of yur breath", which is also as I have seen it described as "sipping the breath". From what I have heard about Southern Preying Mantis, they say that if you had powder under your nose, it wouldn't blow away. (this means cops as well as cocaine addicts can do this!:-) I have three questions regarding this method of breathing. One-is this the way Fukien White Crane breathes during samjien? Two-is this the way Tiet Sien Kuen breathing is done as well? Three-should reverse breathing and/or packing the breath be used during the other Hung Kuen sets as well? -Rik

if i read correctly, we used this breathing when doing my forms.....But I am unsure of other styles whether they uses similar one.
Does this breathing enhance your powess as U continually do your forms. The effect it has on me that the more I exert, the stronger I get....just like running. It can help prolong fatigue & enhance recovery.... Is it what U r expereincing?? Hope that I am on the same waveline.... Regards

im sorry but i cant get an exact picture of what you are conveying but basically what we do and most people do is to breath from the dantien, tensing the dantien and power comes from dantien. sinking the dantien also is one thing. master and many old timers always tell me that a 'full' dantien can be felt by others simply by punching the dantien or just lightly tapping on it, dantien should be solid and the strike should bounce. me,being a playboy, so i have a weaker dantien ;-)
