Hello,
Sorry, I've been rude. I've been posting here for a while and I haven't introduced myself.
My name is Russ Smith, and I usually use "Gojumaster" as my username. I'm really not an ego-maniac, this nickname was given to me by an old acquantance, and it's just stuck. I would never really refer to myself as a master.
Anyhow, I've been training in martial arts for about 16 years now. My core style has always been Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate, but I have dabbled in a number of other things, like Tang Soo Do, Uechi-Ryu, Arnis, Jodo, Wrestling, and am currently really focusing on an Okinawan weapons system, called Matayoshi Kobudo (the old war ways of the Matayoshi family).
I have always, however, enjoyed reading and learning about martial arts of various types. I have read a ton on Okinawan martial arts history, and have (in the past 8-10 years) really started studying (books) the vast array of Chinese martial arts. To this end, I have been learning to read and write Chinese and Japanese which allows me to do research in the native language of the cultures I wish to learn more about. I am also a martial arts book collector; I own hundreds of books, many in Japanese and Chinese (both traditional and simplified). It takes me a long time to read anything, however, because I only have memorized a few hundred kanji to date and I have to refer to a dictionary constantly.
I have been very interested in learning more, specifically, about the Southern Chinese martial arts, because of the historic influences they had on the people who formed the Okinawan martial arts, and I have enjoyed being a part of this and several other forums where I have met some good people (and of course some not-so-good ones).
I have one main student, had a few come and go, and will probably continue to only train and teach privately. I have and maintain a website (http://www.Goju-Ryu.info), where I try to present information about Goju-Ryu and other Okinawan martial arts, and I have built a web application that allows me to securely share and categorize files (research materials) such as videos, images, etc. I am a member of several small "research" groups made up of people like myself who are interested in history, etc., but do not want to just place all gathered information in the public sector (for various reasons).
Anyhow, I appreciate being here and getting to know some of you via this medium. Hopefully I'll get a chance to meet up with some of you in the future.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Best Regards,
Russ Smith
