I see that many schools that teach Chinese martial arts also teach Lion Dancing.
I am curious if Lion dancing has direct connections to Chinese martial disciplines or if it is just a case that kwoons have an interest in Chinese culture and this root promotes interest in other aspects of culture. I guess what I am asking is that - Is the dance ever a part of a gung fu system's official syllabus?
Thanks.

Good day CEB.
To my knowledge, lion dance is a facet of training which enhances one's kung fu. It is obvious that lion dancing requires a lot of skill and a good foundation in the various Ma Bu in order for the lion to look lively and impress the people.
One thing which bothers me, and this topic was recently discussed in my Wu Kuan: Many youth today take up lion dancing just as a sport, without training in kung fu. I will not say this is wrong, but my question is, has lion dancing become less an integral part of kung fu? I believe that if these youth who pursue lion dancing so fervently, should in the future, decide to pursue kung fu, they will no doubt have a strong foundation on which to build on.
Traditionally, Wu Kuans that teach kung fu also teach lion dancing, I have been advised that after one has a sound knowledge of the basics of kung fu, lion dancing will enhance the practitioner's basics and even bring it to another level, there should be truth to this statement.
Maybe other people will be able to comment more on this?
Warmest regards, Tze Hou

Lion Dancing?
These days it's all about winning competitions. A lot of folks train hard to be "Lion King".
Why?
So that they get most invites to perform at ceremonies, festivals and such...
And why again, you ask?
