Hello folks, been lurking around and decided that this forum was worth joining. I have enjoyed your informative discussions and hope you dont mind me participating. Marc Hi Marc, Thank you!! If you have been following the story of this forum, you must be aware that it grew out of 3 friends talking shop – at a very intense level!! Evert – Hungga and other Hakka styles. Martin Watts – Fujian White Crane and others. Myself – A little bit of this and a little bit of that but mainly a little bit of Crane. If you ask me for the intention of this forum, I must say:- 1. A meeting place for traditional martial arts devotees regardless of styles’ country of origin. 2. Looking into cultures and histories of the various styles. 3. Looking into relationship among various styles. For instance, most of us would agree that most Karate grew out of exchanges with the Chinese. My interest is how much did the Okinawans take from the Chinese into the spawning of Karate? For the longest time in my part of the neighborhood, Kung Fu veterans are saying that Fukien and Cantonese Kung Fu are brothers. Many colorful stories are told attesting to this relationship. Hung Hey Koon, founder of Hung Gar for instance, studied in Fukien Shaolin. Many here also believe that the Keks (Hakka) were instrumental in transplanting the martial arts all over China because of their nomadic lifestyles. I would really love to see this composite picture. And the only way is for various players to share openly. Lately, things have been slowing down a bit – not to my liking. Except for some interesting exchanges in the Karate and Wing Chun threads, nothing much is happening. Yes Sir, I am lamenting. I was really hoping to see more intensity in all discussions. Your contributions is telling that me there might be hope yet …. Hahahaha. Sorry for turning your welcome into a lamentation – I am just borrowing a bridge to cross. (One of my White Crane’s fighting principles). Got a email from Evert a couple of days back talking about differences in Taoist and Buddhist breathing and the influence it has on the design fighting techniques. Sounds delicious……………..

Thank you for the warm welcome!
About twenty years ago another Eric, (Lim), of Malaysia helped to introduce me to the individuals that would guide me into a better understanding of these arts and their intricacies. Today after over 30 plus years of doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that, I can finally sit down and comprehend a little when my elders speak.
I have had similar discussions with my friends who are Chinese and do Karate, as well as those who do Hakka and Cantonese arts. Only recently did immigrants from Foo Chow start populating NYC and although interaction has been slow, quite wonderful performances have been demonstrated despite the language barrier. As time goes on maybe we will better understand all these relationships but until then isnt the research captivating?
