Hi folks, Let’s talk sticks here – considered by many to be the “mother of long weapons”. First off, the Ling Nam “Mad Evil” stick pics. This is the famous stick form commonly talked about in Southern CKF circles. There are 2 versions of this – a Northern and Southern Seen this performed when I was in Hong Kong in the late 70s – wow! The second is a picture-perfect posture from the late CLF Master Li Hung.

Good day Eric.
To me, I think a working knowledge of how to use the Seung Tao Gwan and the Dan Tao Gwan is essential in a martial arts curriculum. Both teaches different ways in which the stick can be used to very devastating effect.
In my Hung Gar, Seung Tao Gwan is covered in Siu Lum Gwan Faat and Monkey Pole. Dan Tao Gwan is covered in Ng Long Pak Kwa Gwan, all offering different aspects of using this humblest of weapons.
A little proverb I have been given regarding the pole: Hok Kuen Bat Yat, Hok Gwan Qin Yat, in Mandarin, Xue Quan Bai Ri, Xue Gun Qian Ri, in English, Hundred days to learn the fist, Thousand days to learn the pole.
Warmest regards, Tze Hou

Hi Tze Hou,
Happy New Year.
Double end pole is really, in all characteristics, a stick at work.
Most single end pole is more a “spear” in purpose.
And you know what they say “A pole sweeps a big area, a spear takes a single line”.
Very loosely translated off course.

Southern poles usually fall into anyone of the following area:
cern toa/ double ended
cern gub darn/ single ended with double ended usage
spear like single ended
single ended ba gwa ple (14 points)
single ended pole(6 and a half points)
I personally like the cern gub darn because of the usage.
Single ended is great for taining but who walks around the street with a 7'2 pole, lol.
