Da jia ni men hao Yes, it's not an easy thing to practice. To be able to eliminate all bad karmas and keep on do good karmas in our daily life. Seems very simple and easy, but not. Cheers.

Shaolin temple bhuddism & training in kung fu goes hand in hand. Da jia ni men hao Why the highest level of Chinese martial arts were always created either in Buddhist or Daoist temples? Why has it been monks who have developed all these deadly martial arts? Isn't it strange, because monks main duties are spreading dharmas, not creating deadly movements. One of the main reasons, was for their self defence against bandits whom they might encountered while travelling. But, the other reason is that, through training martial arts, one learn how to use his wisdom mind to conquer or control his emotional mind. This is one of the most effective ways of reaching a high level of spiritual understanding of life. The Buddhist believe that our physical body is only used to cultivate our spirit; once you have reached a high level of spirit, the physical body is no longer important. Cheers.

Hi Suhana, Nin Hao, I always thought that monks/priests are also to protect the weak and defend the truth - which covers suppressing evil. One of the 18 Lohans is "Suppressing Evil" Lohan. Would be difficult to carry out the above if they don't have the necessary skills - you think ? Side note and this came from a old kung fu veteran :- You know how monks and priests vow to stay celibate?(pitbull, that means NO SEX). A lot of chi-gung and breathing exercises are designed to check sexual urge to the point of "impotency". You know that old thinking - no sex and you stay very powerful - hehehehe.

Eric ni hao The monks are vegetarian. By avoiding meats they got the benefit of avoiding "desire" that contained in the slaughtered animals. So they can tamed their biological needs. It's true that sexual activity can reduce one's stamina. That's why the Taoist created the method of having orgasm without" ejaculating" the jing (sperm). Millions have tried this methods but only few can achieved that stage. Unfortunately I am one of the millions, not one of the few ;D Cheers.

I think the reason for that is becuase, in the temple they have all the time to train & that include staying away from negative things & other distraction. The training that include physical & spiritual would give them that skill seldom acquire by non teple dwelers. One reason why they need to train martial art is to allow them to be strong when they confront or perform exorcism. A monk must not only be spiritually strong but must have the physical strength to withstand & fight or subdue a possess person.

Da jia ni men hao If my memory serves me right, there is a saying "Mensana in corpore sano." which means "In the healthy body there is a healthy mind." Cheers. That is very true, in fact I would like to share a personal expereince regarding this matter & it is becuase of this expereince that I deeply beleive in the relationship of having pure spirit combine with good physical skill will equal to great athlete in my case a fighter. When I was a teenager I was always the religious type in fact I even thought of entering the catholic seminary when I was in high school but I didn't becuase I have plans to have a family of my own. When I started training in Kong Han my goal & dream was to be the best kung fu fighter & introduce nck to the world. I train hard, I train almost every day, I even skip school & train at every opportunity. But I also go to church, every Wednesday & Sunday. And in church I pray & meditate to with God being part of my training. 3 years into my training I told myself I'm ready to participate in the local national mix martial art tournament. I have no expereince, I was the youngest fighter at 19 & I was going to fight the defending champion with a record of 6 - 0 with 4 wins by knockdown. Before the schulde fight aside from training hard I pray & meditate deeply too & I would say that it was my spiritualism believing in God, Mary & his angels that protected me & allowed me to win 8x without me or my opponents suffering any serious physical injuries. I attributed my wins & success to God's intervention & guiding hands. Am I being spiritually imaginative?, I don't think so. It is the same with business people who believe in fung shui, they attribute their business success through the intervention of the saints & God.

Good day everybody,
I believe that the Shaolin and Taoist monks used religion to balance out their martial arts training. Training in martial arts, be it for health purposes or for self-defense does create a heightened sense of self-confidence and want to try out skills acquired.
This then creates a sense of aggression and superiority which, when coupled with training of how to maim and kill, can have very serious ramifications. This is the reason why I think that Shaolin believes in order to achieve the ultimate in martial arts, one needs to be as highly skilled in Buddhism, which enhances one to be more at peace and less aggressive.
Sad to say, but I was like that, always looking for chances to try out what I learned, but I have since let go of that and tried to be more at peace with myself.
On the note posted by Suhana, I have heard from numerous sources that men lose a serious amount of internal energy when he climaxes. I do not know how much truth there is to this, but look at the monks and priests who practice abstinence. They believe that the cultivation of internal energy through training is not sufficient, thus find ways and means to conserve this valuable energy.
The Taoist priests developed the breathing set to induce orgasmic sensations as they believe men are men and as such, instincts and urges are hard to control, which is why they created the breathing set to satisfy this urge without the loss of the "jing".
Warmest regards.

Essence ni hao It's simple and easy to prove how important jing is. Just have sex and after that you'll feel "tired" and sleepy ;D And if you wasted to much of your jing thru this activities, sure your martial art training will be affected. Still in doubt? Just try and feel it yourself. Cheers.
